This is a rare, handmade publication that is one of the most obscure of Hunter’s books. These books have been at Owl Farm since Hunter wrote it, and is now available from our personal collection.

"Mistah Leary He Dead" is a chapbook authored by Hunter S. Thompson, published in 1996 by the X-Ray Book Company and Perdido Press. This limited edition work features Thompson's obituary for Timothy Leary, the renowned psychologist and advocate for psychedelic drugs, which was originally published in Rolling Stone magazine.

The chapbook is notable for its artisanal production: it is hand-sewn with handmade paper wrappers and includes semi-translucent rice paper flyleaves. A distinctive feature is a tipped-in simulated acid blotter sheet, scored into sections, each displaying a portrait of Leary printed in purple with the cautionary note "Caution: Do Not Drop."

The publication was limited to 326 copies, comprising 300 numbered and 26 lettered editions. The printing was executed by hand at The New Orleans School of GlassWorks and Printmaking Studio, with design contributions from Johnny Brewton and Karoline Schleh.

Given its limited release and unique features, "Mistah Leary He Dead" is considered a rare collector's item, often commanding high prices in the rare book market.
