Publisher's Note: This essay is the result of a literary submission contest run by Dr. Hunter S. Thompson's wife Anita Thompson after Hunter's death. The contest was both to reflect on the legacy of Hunter's work and to honor new voices on the topic of the American Dream today. Anita Thompson received and read all submissions and selected the top three. The top three then went through a blind selection process conducted by Ralph Steadman, George Stranahan, and fellow board members of the Gonzo Foundation.
